Frequently Asked Questions

Endoscopy Questions

What is a referral?

When you have a health problem, you should first call your primary care physician (PCP).  If the PCP determines that your care requires attention from a Specialist, like a gastroenterologist, a referral may be needed.  For most insurance plans, a referral is required to visit a specialist.  Your PCP may need 2 to 3 days to get the referral.

What is pre-authorization?

If the Specialist has determined that you required a special test, such as an endoscopy, you may need to obtain approval or authorization for this test from your insurance company.  The Specialist should obtain proper pre-authorization for tests.  You may want to call prior to your test to be certain that this has been done.

What is a co-payment?

A co-payment is a specific amount of money required by your insurance company that must be paid when you arrive for your visit.
